Aims of Module

To enable the student to develop an analytical approach to the management of patients with cardio-respiratory dysfunction by integration of the appropriate knowledge and skills.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the anatomy and the physiological, pathological and therapeutic processes related to cardio-vascular, peripheral vascular and respiratory conditions.
2. Justify and perform selected physiotherapy techniques within the team appropriate to the assessment and management of patients with cardio-vascular, peripheral vascular and respiratory disorders and perform resuscitation techniques.
3. Examine and discuss, in relation to patho-physiological processes, the uses and roles of relevant life support and monitoring.
4. Analyse the psychosocial consequences of chronic and acute cardio-respiratory dysfunction and its care pathways.
5. Critically analyse the rehabilitation and health development of people with acute and chronic cardio-vascular and respiratory dysfunction and amputation.

Indicative Module Content

Applied anatomy, physiology and pathology of peripheral and cardiovascular, respiratory and related systems including endocrine, gastro-intestinal, integumentary and urinary. Assessment and management of general and cardio-thoracic surgery, medical chest conditions, intensive and critical care including burns. Related monitoring, ventilation techniques, imaging and pharmacology and psycho-social effects of life threatening illness. Selected physiotherapy treatment and management techniques.
