Aims of Module

This module seeks to provide educational and sociological contexts to inform sports pedagogy practice. The module content will guide students towards understanding how sports coaching exists in a multivariate, interpersonal and dynamic environment and enable them to become aware of the suppressed culture of sports coaching instead of relying solely on the overt nature of basic coaching discourse.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the personal, emotional, cultural and social importance of the coach-athlete relationship.
2. Critically appraise concepts pertaining to the delivery of coaching.
3. Critically review assumptions about practice in a selection of contexts.
4. Based upon individual research, critically evaluate coaching practice in chosen areas of interest.
5. Using academic integrity and awareness, develop educational resources to support the UK coach education framework.

Indicative Module Content

Reflective coaching; instructional methods and pedagogical strategies; quality in coaching; coaching philosophy; empowerment approaches; learning and development orientations; developmentalism in sport; discourse of coaching; coaches’ content knowledge; ‘power’ in the coach-athlete relationship.

Mode of Delivery

A theory-to-practice based programme supported by lectures, seminars and directed reading. Students will also work in small groups to analyse each other’s coaching styles.
