Aims of Module

To enable the student to carry out a comprehensive systematic literature review and write a full research proposal.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Produce a comprehensive critical review of literature, including statistical information in the chosen topic area.
2. Produce a research proposal for the chosen topic justifying selection of methods and tools.
3. Collect, analyse and interpret raw data and present results.
4. Discuss the data in relation to the research question, aims and objectives and the literature.
5. Produce a report that evaluates all aspects of the research process and that includes future recommendations.

Indicative Module Content

Critical review of the literature and managing the research process. Review of common constraints of, and strategies for working within the boundaries of clinical research. Ethics related to research.
Developing and piloting research tools.
Statistics and research 'surgeries'.
Project supervision.

Mode of Delivery

Problem solving workshops. Each student will be allocated a project supervisor from whom he/she will receive tutorial support and relevant advice. The meetings will be initiated by the student and the supervisor will act as a facilitator.

Students may attend some additional material in HS4010 (Research project - delivered to Physiotherapy, Occupatioanl Therapy and Diagnostic Radiography) as appropriate.
