Prerequisites for Module

Successful completion of all level 1, level 2 and level 3 modules of the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy.

Aims of Module

To enable the student to undertake a critical evaluation of patient management, further develop a holistic approach and evaluate alternative management strategies.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Critically analyse and evaluate literature on a selected topic relevant to professional practice.
2. Justify the criteria for the selection and application of physiotherapeutic practice in relation to patient care.
3. Identify and appraise selected alternative physiotherapy management strategies.
4. Apply selected alternative physiotherapy techniques to patient management.
5. Discuss issues relating to role development within the multi-disciplinary team in a holistic approach to patient care.

Indicative Module Content

Case studies will require application of physiotherapy skills in assessment, goal setting and management. Relevant literature will be used to critically evaluate the evidence base and clinical effectiveness. Investigation of alternative management strategies with teaching of selected techniques.
Approach and role of the team and the importance of goal setting will also be considered. Students will discuss and evaluate issues surrounding equity, diversity and ethnicity in the clinical context.

Mode of Delivery

The major style of delivery will be through student-centred activity which will include key note presentations/ lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and practicals.
Directed student activities and presentations will be used.

Assessment Plan

Learning Outcomes Assessed
Coursework 1,2,3,4,5

Coursework assessment consists of a seminar paper and oral presentation, which assess Learning Outcomes 1,2,3 and 5.
In addition, Learning Outcome 4 will be assessed by a portfolio of practical assessments. This must be passed in order to achieve a pass in the module.
