Prerequisites for Module

Successful completion of level 3 modules of the BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography course. Completion of level 4 modules first semester and associated academic modules for second semester.

Aims of Module

The aim of this module is to provide the student with the ability to evaluate the role of the radiographer and to explain how this role is integrated into the healthcare team and its relationship with service provision in different healthcare settings.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Evaluate the roles of team members within a specified diagnostic imaging department.
2. Plan, undertake, evaluate and modify radiographic imaging protocols for all patient groups.
3. Make competent recommendations based on the results of appropriate evaluations.
4. Recognise the need for a co-ordinated approach to image service provision within a specified diagnostic imaging department.
5. Contribute to his/her self-development by reflection on personal strengths and weaknesses.

Indicative Module Content

This practice-based module will include experiential learning involving supervised practice, professional discussion and reflective activities which involve linking theory with practice. This will include orientation to the department and observation of the clinical practices of the clinical supervisor on a day to day basis. The student will also participate in imaging procedures and will have opportunities to self-assess radiographic skills and to plan and organise involvement in the department. Attendance at approporiate clinical meetings will be encouraged. The student will be given the opportunity to reflect on and discuss his/her progress and to explore personal strengths and to implement strategies to overcome weaknesses.

Mode of Delivery

This is a practice based module with supportive input from academic staff. This module consists of placement elements. Each student will undertake 35 hours per week in the nominated clinical imaging department for a period of 5 weeks, this will equate to approximately 175 contact hours.
