Aims of Module
To enable the student to recognise the needs of individuals with acute problems and to discuss and apply management options.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Discuss the impact of acute pathologies on individuals.
2 Discuss, select and plan the assessment and treatment of patients with acute problems across a range of settings whilst considering the whole person.
3 Apply assessment and treatment techniques for patients with acute problems across a range of settings whilst considering the whole person.
4 Evaluate the role of the interdisciplinary team in the holistic management of patients with acute problems.

Indicative Module Content
General: Consent, confidentiality, current policies and legislation relevant to areas. Interdisciplinary working and Professionalism. Care and compassion. Communication with acutely ill persons. Control of infection, safety in the environment. Evidence based practice and decision making, clinical reasoning, values and ethics in healthcare, service delivery. Sustainability and Inclusivity. Diagnostics and Triage: organisation of acute care in the NHS. Physiology, monitoring, anaesthesia, pharmacology, respiratory failure, ABGs, CXR's SIRS, sepsis and MODS, surgery, neurosurgery, cardiothoracics, delirium Burns/plastics, smoke inhalation, VALI and vaping. Incapacity. Treatments: Positioning, exercise, open and closed suction MHI, AD, Manual techniques for chest physiotherapy. Non-invasive and Invasive ventilation, cough assist, oxygen delivery, Pulmonary Rehab. Settings: Anticipatory care, acute medical assessment, intensive and high dependency care, rapid response, and community response to acute respiratory, neurological and musculoskeletal problems.

Module Delivery
Blended delivery comprising on campus and online learning and engagement. This will include Workshops, Tutorials, Practicals, Seminars, Keynote Lectures, Digital Learning Resources and Simulation.

Explanatory Text
C1 is assessed on A-F basis and is 100% of the grade. To achieve a pass a grade D or above is required and a pass in C2 (80% module attendance).

C C1 grade C and C2 Pass
D C1 grade D and C2 Pass

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module Successful completion of all Stage One modules of the Master of Physiotherapy course. Completion of Stage Two, Semester One modules within the Master of Physiotherapy: HS2138 and HS2071 or equivalent.
Corequisites for module None.
