Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different research methodologies.
2. Apply a systematic approach to critical analysis of literature.
3. Select and interpret appropriate statistical tests based upon the data and research design context.
4. Develop a research proposal on a suitable topic.

Indicative Module Content

Introduction to the scientific methods, qualitative and quantitative research design; application of the concepts of validity and reliability to the appraisal of research literature; use of critical appraisal tools to systematically evaluate research, ethical issues in research; role of research and its application, writing hypotheses, aims and objectives; descriptive and inferential statistics including parametric and nonparametric tests (e.g. t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation, Regression, Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U test), use of SPSS to conduct statistical operations, guidance on the development of a suitable research proposal and associated ethics submission.
