Successful completion of Stages 1 and 2 of the BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Science course, or equivalent

Aims of Module
Discuss relevant research design and analysis to enable students to critically appraise evidence and plan their own research.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different research methodologies.

Apply a systematic approach to critical analysis of literature.

3. |
Select and interpret appropriate statistical tests based upon the data and research design context.

4. |
Develop a research proposal on a suitable topic.

Indicative Module Content
Introduction to the scientific methods, qualitative and quantitative research design; application of the concepts of validity and reliability to the appraisal of research literature; use of critical appraisal tools to systematically evaluate research, ethical issues in research; role of research and its application, writing hypotheses, aims and objectives; descriptive and inferential statistics including parametric and nonparametric tests (e.g. t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation, Regression, Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U test), use of SPSS to conduct statistical operations, guidance on the development of a suitable research proposal and associated ethics submission.

| Mode of Delivery
Key note lectures and online study packs to provide theoretical basis. Journal club to apply and discuss the theoretical content. Computer labs and workshops to select, run and interpret appropriate statistical tests. Tutorial sessions to provide guidance on the development of a suitable research proposal.
