Successful completion of all Stage 2 BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy modules, or equivalent.

Aims of Module
To enable the student to recognise the needs of individuals with acute problems and to discuss management options.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Discuss the impact of acute pathologies on individuals.

Discuss and demonstrate selected assessment and treatment techniques for the management of individuals with acute problems across a range of settings.

Evaluate the role of the MDT in the holistic management of patients with acute problems.

Discuss the role of health improvement in the holistic management of acute problems.

Indicative Module Content
General: consent, confidentiality, current policies and legislation relevant to the areas, multi-disciplinary working.
Diagnostics and Triage: organisation of acute care in the NHS, Physiology, life support, monitoring, anaesthesia, pharmacology, ventilation, respiratory failure, ABGs.
SIRS, surgery, soft tissue injuries, cardiothoracics, acute back pain, whiplash, acute confusional state, Burns/plastics, smoke inhalation. Incapacity.
| Treatments: Positioning, exercise, IPPB, MHI, Suction, AD, Manual techniques for chest physiotherapy, rapid response community situations, acute respiratory physiotherapy problems. Control of infection, anticipatory care, review of flags, safety in the environment.
