Successful completion of level 1 and level 2 of the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy course.

Aims of Module

To enable the student to explore the occupational development of individuals and populations from infancy through adolescence and adults with special needs.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the biological, medical, psychological and social components that impede normal human development throughout the life span.
2. Plan and justify appropriate intervention plans as well as select, modify and adapt intervention activities to promote role performance in individuals with special needs.
3. Explore the principles of effective teamwork
4. Explore a range of contentious issues related to current practice with individuals and groups with special needs

Indicative Module Content

Theory, scope of practice, service delivery models and common developmental and paediatric conditions seen by occupational therapists. Human performance is emphasised and related to normal processes affecting growth, development, self-care, play/leisure and family functioning. Students integrate and apply the above information to occupational therapy assessment and intervention techniques in sensory, perceptual, motor, cognitive, emotional and social skill development. Study also provides information on public policy related to children. Students learn the importance of functional, developmental age-appropriate activities and family involvement.
