Aims of Module

To enable the student to experience the range of client contact from initial consultation to programme evaluation, from a perspective of the individual exerciser.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the effects of age, gender and health status on exercise capability
2. Compile and justify individual exercise session plans with appropriate modifications on the basis of age, gender and health status of clients.
3. Discuss and justify alternative strategies employed to encourage adherence to exercise programmes
4. Select appropriate exercise test protocols for specific client needs.
5. Discuss environmental, psychological and socio-economic factors which may influence an individual's participation in physical activity.

Indicative Module Content

Exercise consultation, stages of change of exercise behaviour, goal setting. Exercise testing protocols. Exercise prescription programmes. Tailoring exercise programmes for different stages of the life cycle, and selected medical conditions. GP referral schemes. Strategies to improve adherence. Programme evaluation and follow up.
