Successful completion of HS1036 Nutrition & Metabolism, HS1042 Structure and Function of the Human Body, HS2035 Nutrition and the Life Cycle.

HS3046 Body Composition and Anthropometry.

Aims of Module

To provide the student with the ability to evaluate and advise on the nutritional requirements of the exercising individual.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the effects of exercise on the nutritional and fluid requirements of the exercising individual.
2. Discuss how diet can effect exercise performance.
3. Discuss different strategies to achieve optimal nutrition for training and competition.
4. Report on the nutritional requirements of specific sports.

Indicative Module Content

Macronutrients and micronutrients. Exercise and energy balance - intake and expenditure. The important role of water in exercise performance. The effect of exercise on nutritional requirements and the role of diet in exercise performance. The importance of optimal nutrition - pre-event nutrition and post-exercise recovery. Eating strategies used in different sport disciplines. The role of supplements and ergogenic aids. Specific nutritional requirements necessary for different sports and environmental conditions.

Coursework consists of using specific software to design a seven day diet for different athletes, and to provide a written report justifying the diet composition and design.
