Aims of Module

The aim of the module is to provide the student with a knowledge and understanding of the patient presenting with acute and traumatic injuries. The student will become familiar with radiological trauma techniques and procedures for care and investigation of the trauma patient including those with specific needs.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Critically evaluate the care and communication requirements of the trauma and specific needs patient.
2. Discuss the implications of care pathways associated with management of the specific needs patient and how these influence the radiographic procedure.
3. Discuss and evaluate strategies in technique to facilitate quality imaging of the specific needs patient
4. Interpret and critically evaluate images of the specific needs patient.

Indicative Module Content

This module considers the technology and techniques required to produce diagnostic and supporting images for the patient presenting post trauma and/or acute episodes. The student will investigate various trauma pathways from initial presentation e.g. accident and emergency, theatre, ITU and isolation; reflecting on the role of the radiographer in these areas.
Students will also consider subgroups within the population - paediatrics, neonatal, elderly, infectious, ethnic groups, existing physical/mental impairment.
