Prerequisites for Module

Successful completion of HS1040 Pathology; HS1047 Musculoskeletal Assessment and Treatment 1; HS2039 Musculoskeletal Assessment and Treatment 2 and HS3033 Cardio-respiratory Physiotherapy.

Aims of Module

To enable the student to review and develop physiotherapy skills and adapt them appropriately to different client groups.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Identify, discuss and appraise relevant techniques and skills in physiotherapy practice.
2. Apply relevant techniques and skills to physiotherapy practice.
3. Analyse and examine the physiotherapy management of patients with different needs.
4. Discuss a patient centred physiotherapy approach to the management of individuals.

Indicative Module Content

Skills will be reviewed and developed in areas of manual and electrotherapy, exercise and movement and health education and improvement. Teaching in relation to specific client groups will also be included where appropriate to allow a full range of application and adaptation to be developed. Client group areas to be examined will be paediatrics, women's health, men's health, learning disabilities and sporting activity. Principles of exercise prescription for various client groups. Principles of taping, splinting and orthotics. Chronic pain, trauma and reconstructive surgery of the hand.
Treatment settings will be considered. The process of reflection and clinical reasoning will be discussed. Students will also discuss issues surrounding equity, diversity and ethnicity in the clinical setting.

The course will be delivered by lectures, tutorials, groupwork, practical classes and workshops.

Component 1 - Written reflective portfolio.

Component 3 - Minimum of 80% attendance required to pass the module.

Component 2 -Portfolio of practical assessments. This must be passed in order to achieve a pass in the module.
