Aims of Module

To enable the student to understand the special conditions and environments that influence the management of critically ill adults and children and their multi-dimensional needs.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the pathophysiological background of cardiac and respiratory conditions.
2. Discuss and demonstrate selected assessment and treatment techniques related to the management of cardio-respiratory patients.
3. Outline the principles of life support systems, monitoring, anaesthesia and relevant pharmacology.
4. Discuss the physiotherapy management of patients in critical or acute facilities and the role of the inter-disciplinary team.
5. Discuss the rehabilitation of cardio-respiratory patients and the psycho-social effects of these conditions and settings.

Indicative Module Content

Anatomy, physiology and pathologies of common paediatric and neonatal conditions. Pathophysiology of cardiac and respiratory failure and surgery. Relevant pharmacological and radiological interventions.The role of and management by physiotherapists and the interdisciplinary team within acute and specialist settings such as intensive therapy and cornonary care units.The continuing rehabilitation of cardiac and respiratory conditions.The psychosocial and socio-ecomonic consequences of these conditions and the factors affecting late stage rehabilitation and integration into society.

Component 1- Case study with report to include analysis of critical data, pharmacology and radiographs.
