Prerequisites for Module

Successful completion of level 2 modules of the BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography course will normally be required.
Successful completion of modules Radiography : HS2013 Clinical Education 2 and HS3016 Radiography Clinical Education 3 are essential prerequisites.

Aims of Module

The aim of this module is to provide the student with the ability to further examine the role of the radiographer and how this role is integrated into the healthcare team and its relationship with service provision in different healthcare settings. From a radiographic perspective this module will include interventional procedures, ward and theatre work.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Interact independently with patients, carers and other health professionals and evaluate the role of other team members.
2. Plan, undertake, evaluate and modify radiographic examinations including interventional procedures, ward and theatre work.
3. Make competent recommendations based on the results of appropriate evaluations.
4. Recognise the need for a co-ordinated approach to service provision.
5. Contribute to his/her self-development by reflection on personal strengths and weaknesses.

Indicative Module Content

This practice-based module will include experiential learning involving supervised practice, professional discussion and reflective activities which involve linking theory with practice. This will include orientation to the department and observation of the clinical practices of the Clinical Supervisor on a day to day basis. The student will also participate in imaging procedures including interventional procedures, ward and theatre work. The student will have opportunities to self-assess radiographic skills and to plan and organise involvement in the department. Attendance at appropriate clinical meetings will be encouraged. The student will be given the opportunity to reflect on and discuss his/her progress and to explore personal strengths and to implement strategies to overcome weaknesses.

Mode of Delivery

This is a practice based module with supportive input from academic staff. This module consists of placement elements. Each student will undertake 35 hours per week in the nominated clinical imaging department for a period of 7 weeks. In addition, students will undertake 55 hours of private study.

The module is assessed via continuous assessment (results noted in proforma). In addition, Learning Outcome 1 will be assessed on a pass/fail basis by a reflective account of an interaction with another student/qualified health professional.

Additional Notes

Half-way contacts by link tutors will help to monitor the student's progress and integration of academic theory and clinical practice. Students will be guided on the nature and purpose of the reflective account prior to going on placement.
