Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Discuss the impact of acute pathologies on individuals. |
2 | Discuss, select, plan in a patient centred manner and apply physiotherapy assessment and treatment techniques for the management of individuals with acute problems across a range of settings. |
3 | Evaluate the role of the MDT in the holistic management of patients with acute problems. |
4 | Explain the strengths and weaknesses of evidence supporting an area of practice and identify the importance of evidence based practice in supporting clinical decision making. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
General: Consent, confidentiality, current policies and legislation relevant to areas. Multidisciplinary working and Professionalism. Care and compassion. Communication with acutely ill persons. Diagnostics and Triage: organisation of acute care in the NHS. Physiology, life support, monitoring, anaesthesia, pharmacology, ventilation, respiratory failure, ABG’s. SIRS, surgery, neurosurgery, soft tissue injuries, cardiothoracics, acute back pain, whiplash, acute confusional state, Burns/plastics, smoke inhalation. Incapacity. Treatments: Positioning, exercise, IPPB, MHI, suctions, AD, Manual techniques for chest physiotherapy. Settings: Anticipatory care, acute medical assessment, rapid response, and community response to acute respiratory, neurological and musculoskeletal problems. Control of infection, safety in the environment. Evidence based practice and decision making, clinical reasoning, values and ethics in healthcare, journal clubs, outcome measures, research design, bias, evaluation of literature quality. Professionalism and values in healthcare, service delivery. |
