Aims of Module
To enable the student to integrate and apply the concepts of mental health within occupational therapy practice, demonstrating skills of clinical reasoning and reflection.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Identify the epidemiology, aetiology, classification, clinical features, course, differential diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and management of mental illness in relation to current mental health practice.

Demonstrate effective occupational therapy, integrating theory and practice in the context of mental health.

3. |
Explain the concept of multi-disciplinary working in relation to effective patient/client care.

4. |
Apply appropriate occupation-based practice.

Indicative Module Content
The impact of a range of mental health conditions on an individual's health, wellbeing and lifestyle; Mental Health (Scotland) Act 1984; care programme approach, clinical governance, risk management. The role of the occupational therapist within a team approach, integrated occupational therapy, the interface between hospital and community, developing the therapeutic relationship, adaptation through occupation, current practice in rehabilitation, proactive approaches to mental health, outcome measures - generic/specialist.
