Aims of Module

To enable the students to have an awareness of the common physical and psycho-social factors that have an impact on the ability to perform activity and sport. To consider environmental and other constraints that may limit participating in activity and sport.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Explain a range of physical and psychological conditions and their associated impact on physical activity and sporting activity.
2. Explain the physical and psychological aspects/causes of acute and chronic pain.
3. Describe the modifications, precautions and contraindications related to physical activity for individuals with a variety of physical and psychological conditions.
4. Discuss the role of health care professionals for individuals with common physical and psychological conditions.
5. Explain the different environmental factors and constraints to physical activity and sport.

Indicative Module Content

Common physical, pathological and psychological conditions affecting the ability to perform exercise for a range of physical and other disabilities to include coronary or pulmonary disease, osteoporosis, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, amputation, arthritis, obesity and mental health problems. The implications that the pathologies, pain and the effects of ageing have on performance/participation in exercise and sport, the effects exercise has on these conditions and individuals in pain, including chronic pain.
Environmental, economic, home, time, work, family constraints to participation in activity and sporting activity.
Modifications, precautions and contraindications to exercise and sporting activity for individuals with various conditions. The role of the health care and other professionals.
