Aims of Module

The aims of the module are to:
Increase awareness of the dimensions of health development and health improvement.
Enable students to relate the concept of health development in the context of sport and leisure.
Develop individual ability to plan, implement and evaluate health development initiatives.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Explain the concepts, theories and models of health promotion in the context of health development.
2. Examine the role of sport exercise in health improvement.
3. Examine the concept of empowerment and the contribution of sport in this area.
4. Determine the main challenges of applying health development to different population groups in society.
5. Plan, implement and evaluate a sport and fitness initiative.

Indicative Module Content

Theories and models of health promotion; principles; approaches to health development; social policy and health; health inequalities; health and empowerment; needs assessment and stages of planning; evaluation; implementing health development initiatives. Sports and physical activity policies, organisational structures in sport, effect of sports and exercise on health, well-being and quality of life.
