Successful completion of HS2015 Practice Placement 2.

Aims of Module

To enable the student to further develop professional skills and attitudes and examine the role of the occupational therapist within a designated unit/department.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Explain the roles of all the team members within the designated department.
2. Discuss and participate (with supervision) in the occupational therapy process within the unit/department.
3. Teach skills and/or activities.
4. Identify the organisational structure and management systems relevant to occupational therapy.
5. Critically evaluate his/her practice by means of critical incident analysis.

Indicative Module Content

The completion of this practice based module will include experiential learning involving practice, professional discussion and reflective activities, including linking theory to practice. Orientation to the unit/department, observation of practice educator in daily practice; participation in the occupational therapy process; teaching skills and/or activities; planning and implementing activities; routine management tasks; attendance at appropriate meetings; opportunities for reporting and recording; reflection and analysis of practice; exploration of personal and professional development.

Each student will complete 36 hours per week in the placement for a period of 5 weeks. The placement will include one half day per week for private study (5 x 4 hours).

Mode of Delivery

This practice based module will be facilitated by a partnership between the student, practice educators and module academic leaders.

Component 1 - Assessment of Professional Skills using Placement Assessment Proforma

Component 3 - Assessment of Professional Integrity using Placement Assessment Proforma.
Regular supervision sessions will take place between the students and the Practice Educators. Students and Educator will negotiate half-way and fnal reports using the proforma Assessment Form linked to criterion referenced learning outcomes of the placement.

Halfway contacts by academic staff will help to monitor student's progress and integrate academic based and practice studies. During this placement and Practice Placement 4, the student is completing module Practice Analysis involving the completion of critical incident analysis as a means of assisting reflection in practice. This placement will form part of the evidence of satisfactory completion of 1,000 hours of practice education required by the College of Occupational Therapists and World Federation of Occupational Therapists.
