Prerequisites for Module

Successful completion of level 1 modules for BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography and first semester modules of level 2 BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography course will normally be required.
Successful completion of module HS1019 Radiography: Clinical Education 1 is an essential prerequisite.

Aims of Module

The aim of this module is to provide the student with the ability to apply and appraise radiography practice within the imaging department and the hospital environment and continue to develop professional skills and attitudes. From a radiographic perspective this module will enable the student to reflect on previous learning and experiences to modify examinations of skeleton and chest.


Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the roles of all the team members in the diagnostic imaging department and in the wider clinical environment.
2. Plan, perform and evaluate (and modify where appropriate) radiographic examinations.
3. Recognise the need for risk/benefit analysis of clinical imaging procedures from the clinical information available on the request form (and in the patient's notes where appropriate).
4. Reflect on personal strengths and weaknesses.

Indicative Module Content

This practice-based module will include experiential learning involving supervised practice, professional discussion and reflective activities which involve linking theory with practice. This will include orientation to the department and observation of the clinical practices of the Clinical Supervisor on a day to day basis. The student will be encouraged to reflect on previous learning and experiences to modify examinations of skeleton and chest.
The student will have opportunities to self-assess radiographic skills and to plan and organise involvement in the department. Attendance at appropriate clinical meetings will be encouraged. The student will be given the opportunity to reflect on and discuss his/her progress and to explore personal strengths and to implement strategies to overcome weaknesses.

Mode of Delivery

This is a practice based module with supportive input from academic staff. This module consists of placement elements. Each student will undertake 35 hours per week in the nominated clinical imaging department for a period of 5 weeks, this will equate to approximately 175 contact hours.
