Aims of Module | |||

To enable students to safely plan and implement basic physiotherapy treatments. To understand the role of physiotherapy in health improvement and the impact of inequalities of health on individuals and communities. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Safely and effectively perform core therapeutic interventions. |
2 | Safely and effectively deliver patient education and advice in a patient centred manner. |
3 | Describe the underlying theory relating to the principles and practice of health improvement. |
4 | Demonstrate an awareness of the physiotherapist's role in Health Improvement within the multidisciplinary team. |
5 | Identify and describe various research paradigms and types of research design, and have an understanding of common research terminology. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
Health improvement- health promotion, public health, inequalities in health, equity and diversity, communication, mental health and wellbeing, determinants of health, empowerment, theories of health improvement, motivation, behavioural change, involvement of carers. The physiotherapists role in the MDT. Patient education/self-management/patient-centeredness. Flags. Exercise– Physiology, introduction to psychology/behaviour change/adherence, prescription for aerobic fitness, flexibility/ROM strength and function, promotion of physical activity, group exercise. Introduction to PNF. Balance, postural control and stability, sensation & proprioception Chest physiotherapy- techniques for managing breathlessness and sputum clearance including ACBT, positioning and mobilisation. Electrotherapy- Heat/cold, US, PSWT, TENS, IFT. Mobility and functional assessment.Walking aid prescription Clinical reasoning and documentation/record keeping. Medical ethics, and ethical practice. Manual therapy- Physiological and therapeutic effects, indications/contraindications, precautions and appropriate application of selected massage techniques and soft tissue mobilisation including deep transverse frictions. Research paradigms, research designs. Research terminology. |
