Aims of Module

To enable the student to gain an understanding of the requirements for radiography of the axial skeleton, abdomen and pelvis.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Describe the gross anatomy, skeletal anatomy and external surface anatomy of the axial skeleton, abdomen and pelvis.
2. Describe the use of radiographic equipment and associated technology used in plain film radiography of of the axial skeleton, abdomen and pelvis.
3. Describe the appropriate patient postioning and radiographic technique for the axial skeleton, abdomen and pelvis.

Indicative Module Content

Gross antomy of the axial skelton, abdomen and pelvis.
Surface anatomy of the axial skelton, abdomen and pelvis.
Equipment required to carry out plain film axial skelton, abdomen and pelvis radiography.
Radiographic procedures to carry out plain film axial skelton, abdomen and pelvis radiography.
Common trauma and pathologies of these areas.
Safety in a radiation setting.
Communication with patients, carers and staff members.
