Aims of Module

To introduce the student to the application of models and approaches employed in occupational therapy for physical dysfunctions, the multifactorial nature of conditions resulting in physical dysfunction, the basic concepts of selected conditions and the rehabilitation and/or management of clients with these conditions.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Describe the application of models and approaches employed in occupational therapy for physical dysfunction.
2. Describe the epidemiology, aetiology and clinical course of selected conditions.
3. Outline the medical and surgical treatment of clients with these conditions and indicate the contribution made by each member of the multidisciplinary team.
4. Summarise the specific skills of the occupational therapist in relation to clients with these conditions.

Indicative Module Content

Aetiology, epidemiology, pathology, clinical features, risk factors, medical and surgical management associated with selected energy restricting conditions. Improvement of health in individuals with these conditions.
The role and skills of the occupational therapist within the interdisciplinary team in the overall management of individuals with these conditions.
Application of occupational therapy approaches in the remediation of physical dysfunction
