Aims of Module

To enable the student to explore the concepts of mental health and apply psychosocial approaches of occupational therapy practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the aetiology, clinical features, sociological and psychological features of mental illness in relation to current mental health practice.
2. Describe the core and specialist skills of the occupational therapist within mental health practice as part of a multi-professional team.
3. Discuss and analyse the application of occupation based practice within a mental health context.

Indicative Module Content

Development of mental health services, classification and terminology related to psychiatric disorders, personality development and structures, factors relating to the development of mental illness, continuum of mental illnes, mental health improvement, client empowerment, inclusion and involvement, psycho-educational approach to mental Health. Psychosocial theory and application of occupational therapy, integrating theory and practice, occupation based practice, evidence based practice and outcome measures, introduction to the concepts of clinical reasoning and reflective practice. Self and self perception, social interaction, personality structure, overview of psycho-dynamic theory, humanistic theory, psychological factors and their relationship to illness behaviour, psychology of addictive behaviours, psychological approaches.

Mode of Delivery

This is a lecture based module supplemented by tutorial sessions, case studies, group work, practical workshops, seminars and directed reading.

Component 1 - This module will be assessed through coursework comprising 4 essay style questions. In order to pass this module you are required to have an 80% attendance at classes.
