Aims of Module

To provide the student with the ability to understand the biopsychosocial basis of human growth and development, its normal and atypical variations and the influence of genetic and environmental factors in affecting stature, physique and capacity for physical activity.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Describe the lifespan approach to human development.
2. Describe the process of normal human growth and development, and identify abnormalities in individuals and groups.
3. Identify and analyse the conditions required for normal growth and development at different stages of the lifespan, and related capacity for physical activity, and outline the implications for sports participation.

Indicative Module Content

Basic concepts of human growth, maturation and development: pre-natal, infancy, childhood, adolescence to adulthood. Sexual, skeletal and somatic maturation. Assessment of growth and physique, anthropometric indices, growth curves, anthropometric standards. Factors influencing growth and development through the life cycle, genetic nutritional, psychosocial and other environmental influences. Abnormal growth. Secular trends in growth.

The biopsychosocial/lifespan approach to psychosocial development. Sociocognitive functioning at stages of the lifespan with particular relevance to physical activity and sport: eg childhood, adolescence, and late adulthood. Conditions for healthy psychological functioning during these stages. Effective communication between the exercise scientist and individual client groups at selected stages of psychological functioning. Motivation at certain stages of development.
