Aims of Module
This module will enable the student to define the occupational therapy process in practice, identify core occupational therapy skills and demonstrate effective professional communication and information gathering.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Define the role of the occupational therapist within the practice setting.
2 Describe the occupational therapy process
3 Demonstrate communication and observation skills essential for assessment and information gathering, whilst managing own health and wellbeing.
4 Select a relevant journal article and outline its link to practice setting.
5 Identify members of the inter-disciplinary team involved in care and treatment of patients/clients.

Indicative Module Content
This practice based module has a focus on experiential learning involving occupational therapy practice, professional discussion and reflective activities supporting connections between theory and practice relevant to the stage of learning of the student. Under the supervision of the practice educator the student will engage in a range of activities integral to occupational therapy practice demonstrating an appropriate level of care and communication towards service users including obtaining informed consent and exercising a professional duty of care Induction to the setting; communication skills; occupational therapy process; assessment/information gathering; documentation; planning; implementing; evaluation of intervention; evidence based practice; routine management tasks; health and safety/risk management; attendance at appropriate meetings; reflection and analysis of practice; personal and professional behaviour and development; value and meaning of occupation to individuals

Prerequisites for Module Completion of Stage 1 academic modules of the Master of Occupational Therapy course.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
Halfway contacts by academic staff aid in monitoring the student's progress and integrate academic based and placement studies. This placement will form part of the evidence of satisfactory completion of 1,000 hours of practice education required by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and World Federation of Occupational Therapists.
