Prerequisites for Module

Completion of six first year modules of BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography Course will normally be required.

Aims of Module

To provide the student with the ability to apply radiographic practice within a designated placement and begin to develop professional skills and attitudes. From a radiographic perspective this module will introduce diagnostic imaging of chest and thoracic contents and appendicular skeleton.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Describe the role of the Radiographer within a designated placement.
2. Practice radiographic procedures under clinical supervision.
3. Apply communication systems which support the x-ray examination.
4. Assess his/her clinical skills by reflection on practice.

Indicative Module Content

This practice-based module will include experiential learning involving supervised practice, professional discussion and reflective activities which involve linking theory with practice. This will include orientation to the department and observation of the clinical practices of the Clinical Supervisor on a day by day basis. The student will be introduced to imaging procedures of chest and thoracic contents and appendicular skeleton. The student will also have opportunities to self-assess radiographic skills and to plan and organise involvement in the department. Attendance at appropriate clinical meetings will be encouraged. The student will be given the opportunity to reflect on and discuss his/her progress and to explore personal strengths and to implement strategies to overcome weaknesses.

Mode of Delivery

This is a practice based module with supportive input from academic staff. This module consists of placement elements. Each student will undertake 35 hours per week in the nominated clinical imaging department for a period of 6 weeks, this will equate to approximately 210 contact hours.
