Aims of Module

To provide students with a knowledge and understanding of information and communication technology and the manner in which it is applied. To provide students with practical skills in using key ICT applications.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. describe and critically evaluate the key function of ICT hardware and software and their application.
2. apply knowledge of ICT in a problem-solving scenario.
3. demonstrate practical application of ICT skills in word-processing, spreadsheets and use of graphics.

Indicative Module Content

The module provides a basic introduction to the characteristics and processes of information and communications technologies. It describes and discusses functions and operations of computers; basic microcomputer architecture, I/O systems, file and directory structures and management systems and applications software, communications technology, networking- LANs, MANs, WANs, internet, network topology and protocols. Information design and specialist applications. The module will develop basics of network login and running applications, administration of e-mail account; connection to different file servers within the University, connection to remove hosts; Windows interface commands and features, use of Microsoft Word for wordprocessing, Excel for spreadsheet applications, use of Powerpoint for Business Graphics.

Examination 1

There will be TWO coursework assessments. Coursework 1 will consist of an evaluative report which tests practical understanding of subject and practical skills in using IT. Coursework 2 is a 2 hour written examination.
