Aims of Module
To provide a survey of socially responsible management issues as relevant to engineers' professional development and work context. To introduce potential standards, guidelines and concepts for socially responsible management; build awareness of key concepts in the relationship between engineering and society; and develop competence in writing non-technical reports.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate awareness of the importance of socially responsible management to an engineer's professional development by identifying the societal, environmental and ethical issues and impacts of engineering projects.
2 Show understanding of a range of standards and strategies which may inform socially responsible management practice, evaluating their relative strengths and weaknesses.
3 Evidence ability to communicate societal, environmental and ethical issues relevant to engineering clearly, through production of an outline socially responsible management strategy document.

Indicative Module Content
Key concepts and standards in socially responsible management (social licence to operate; responsible innovation; ISO26000; UN Global Compact); risk governance (risk characterisation and communication); stakeholder mapping and engagement; community relations and the legacy of infrastructure projects; building sustainable community relations; understanding value chains; building value across the supply chain. Content will be supported with case studies throughout, and students will be encouraged to make links to their own experiences and practices.
