Aims of Module
This module aims to develop an understanding of well intervention well control fundamentals and will enable students to use these principles in the planning and performing of any well services operation.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically review and evaluate completion schematics, including completion equipment.
2 Describe and appraise the fundamentals of well intervention/servicing well control operations.
3 Identify well control problems and apply mathematical solutions to the well control problems.
4 Specify BOP equipment to be utilised for well intervention operations, including the functions of the specialist equipment.
5 Apply and design strategies for well intervention well control operations and management procedures.

Indicative Module Content
Overview of Completions: Introduction, classification of completions, completion equipment. Well intervention services: Introduction, snubbing, wireline and coiled tubing. Pressure control concepts and theory. Production well control methods and procedures. Well intervention well control methods: Introduction, barrier theory and types, well intervention well control, well control mathematical solutions. Reasons for well interventions well control: Introduction, tubing blockage, control of excessive water or gas production, mechanical failure, stimulation, sand control. Well control in hydraulic workovers. Well control for subsea completions. Well control operations, equipment and specific containment problems: Introduction, snubbing operations, wireline operations, coiled tubing operations, Other well intervention well control: pumping operations and wellhead and tree maintenance. Risk assessment: PUWER, LOLER, HAZID. Well intervention well control management.

Module Delivery
This is a lecture based module supplemented by tutorials, practical work and case studies supplemented by industrial visits/industry speakers. Shell's Wells Distance Learning Package (WDLP) will be used as core material.

Students are required to have been awarded the Shell Round II Certificate or equivalent Shell Diploma.
Module Grade Minimum Requirements to achieve Module Grade:
Pass Pass Shell's Wells Distance Learning Package Round II.
Fail Fail Shell's Wells Distance Learning Package Round II.
NS Non-submission of work by published deadline or non-attendance for examination

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module Access to this module is limited to students sponsored by Shell. Normally a UK 2.2 honours degree or above, or equivalent, in Engineering or a related discipline. Proficiency in English language for academic purposes, IELTS score of 6.5 or above. Qualification through previous relevant industry experience may be considered.
Corequisites for module None.
