Aims of Module
To develop English Language skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening equivalent to IELTS 6.5 (CEFR B2+/C1).

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Produce written assignments showing detailed application of academic style, grammar, presentation and referencing of academic texts, journals, websites and online resources.
2 Gather and evaluate information relevant to own subject area from a range of sources to include academic texts, journals, websites and on-line databases.
3 Express complex ideas clearly, using a wide range of appropriate vocabulary and cohesive devices.
4 Comprehend, analyse and evaluate written and spoken academic English.
5 Prepare and deliver an oral presentation in English based on research.

Indicative Module Content
Written and spoken academic English; academic style; collocation; complex structures; cohesive devices; grammatical range and accuracy; less common and idiomatic vocabulary; word choice and formation; expressing complex ideas; presenting arguments; generic conventions; quoting, paraphrasing and summarising; referencing; plagiarism; presentation skills; discussion skills; identifying and gathering information sources; comprehending and evaluating complex information sources; analysing complex academic information; listening and note-making in lectures; reading strategies.

Module Delivery
Class-based attendance at lectures, tutorials and participation in group discussion. Guided private and self-study using printed and on-line resources.

Description: A series of class tests to assess grammar, listening, writing and reading skills.
