Aims of Module
To develop English Language skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening equivalent to IELTS 6.0 (CEFR B2).

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Produce written assignments in English applying academic conventions of style, presentation, grammar and referencing.
2 Conduct research in order to gather and evaluate information, adhering to University guidelines on referencing.
3 Prepare and deliver an oral presentation in English based on research.
4 Comprehend and extract meaning from spoken and written English.

Indicative Module Content
Written and spoken academic English; cohesive devices; grammatical range and accuracy; vocabulary development; word choice and formation; presenting arguments; generic conventions; quoting, paraphrasing and summarising; referencing; plagiarism; presentation skills; discussion skills; identifying and gathering information sources; comprehending and evaluating information sources; analysing academic information; listening and note-making in lectures; reading strategies.

Module Delivery
Class-based attendance at lectures, tutorials and participation in group discussion. Guided private and self-study using printed and on-line resources.
