Aims of Module
To provide students with an opportunity to work in a real computing workplace in order to improve their future employability through developing existing technical skills, acquiring new ones, improving soft skills, and gaining practical experience in their chosen field.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Take responsibility for practical computing tasks in a workplace using existing technical skills.
2 Solve practical computing tasks in a workplace using newly acquired technical skills.
3 Generate professional skills enabling you to operate in an efficient and professional manner as an individual in a workplace.
4 Produce effective interaction with others in a workplace, including colleagues, customers, clients, and managers.
5 Appraise the skills, knowledge and experience gained from the placement in the context of employability and future career choices.

Indicative Module Content
This module is based on a placement at an external organisation. The student will be given the opportunity to improve both their technical and soft skills through working within the organisation. However, the exact nature of this will vary widely depending on the type of organisation hosting the student and the role undertaken by the student within that organisation.

Module Delivery
Students work in an external organisation for 30-45 weeks. Each student has a member of academic staff acting as an Academic Tutor to provide any necessary support and oversight.

Component 1
Type: Coursework Weighting: 100% Outcomes Assessed: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Description: A portfolio of evidence appraising the success of the placement, which is made up of two parts. The first part comprises a number of reports by the student's Industrial Supervisor and/or Academic Tutor detailing the perceived performance of the student during the placement. The second part is a report by the student, describing what they have achieved on the placement and reflecting on how it has benefitted them.

The calculation of the overall grade for this module is based on 100% weighting of a single coursework. An overall minimum grade D is required to pass the module

A The student needs to achieve an A in C1.
B The student needs to achieve an B in C1.
C The student needs to achieve an C in C1.
D The student needs to achieve an D in C1.
E The student needs to achieve an E in C1.
F The student needs to achieve an F in C1.
NS Non-submission of work by published deadline or non-attendance for examination

Prerequisites for Module 120 credits contributing to the award of a postgraduate diploma.

This module is optional, and the credits awarded are in addition to the 120 credits achievable from the taught modules. Successful completion is not required for progression to the next stage. The credits for this module may not be used to compensate for any credits from the taught modules.
