Aims of Module
To provide the student with the ability to evaluate and apply the methodologies and techniques used in the development and administration of modern databases.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Identify, explain and apply the main principles and techniques for, the development of object and relational databases.
2 Explain, analyse and apply techniques for database administration.
3 Explain, analyse and apply techniques for database tuning and optimisation.
4 Describe, analyse and apply the methods used in the development of databases for the Internet.

Indicative Module Content
Database analysis and design: Entity-Relationship modelling, Object-Oriented and Object-Relational databases. Fundamentals of database administration: creating a database, storage management, managing users, backup and recovery. Database performance and tuning: query processing and optimisation, SQL tuning. Databases and the internet; modelling and design of data intensive web sites; web interfaces for DB systems; the XML language.

Module Delivery
Key concepts are introduced and illustrated through lectures and directed reading. The understanding of students is tested and further enhanced through interactive tutorials. In the laboratories the students will progress through a sequence of exercises to develop sufficient knowledge of database security applications.
