Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Demonstrate skills, attitudes and behaviours appropriate to the workplace, including, but not limited to, technical skills, communication skills, planning and organisational skills and personal and professional skills. |
2 | Demonstrate the theories, models, concepts and principles acquired during the course to the workplace. |
3 | Review their own strengths and weaknesses as computing professionals. |
4 | Demonstrate evidence of new learning with regards to knowledge, skills and attitudes required for effective practice in the computing industry in compliance with legal, social, ethical and professional issues. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
Training sessions: job seeking skills; including CV writing, interview skills and business etiquette. Making the most of the placement, including; organisational structures, interpersonal skills, professional conduct, BCS codes of practice and conduct, legislation, health and safety, data protection, computer misuse, Personal Development Plan (PDP), the BCS Continuous Professional Development Plan (CPD) scheme, including the Industry Structure Model (ISM), development plans and the record book. Obtaining a placement: applying for vacancies, attending interviews and agreeing on a contract. Work placement: attending the company's induction, liaising with the Industrial Supervisor and Academic Tutor, working with the organisational structure, applying interpersonal skills, taking on responsibilities, working in a professional manner, gathering of evidence for the portfolio and poster session. PDP: identifying specific skills to be developed during placement year by setting up goals and targets in relation to the learning and exposure that will be obtained in the training period. CPD: negotiating a development plan, including cells within the Industry Structure Model (ISM), implementing the development plan and maintaining the record book. Report: presenting the BCS CPD material and portfolio in a report format. Poster presentation and viva: presenting the BCS CPD material and presenting evidence of reflection on both experience gained and knowledge gained through the work placement (portfolio) in a poster session. |

The period of the industrial placement module will be 48 full-time working weeks excluding holidays. Students spend their placement working in an industrial or commercial setting. Students are supervised by the Industrial Supervisor and supported by the IIT Academic Tutor. |

Description: | Produce a portfolio of evidence showing engagement in the industry placement. This will include attendance in pre-placement training sessions, creation of a CV, production of a personal development plan, a placement agreement, a final placement report including records and references of company service. The project culminates in a poster presentation and viva. |
