Prerequisites for Module

Anyone undertaking this module is normally expected to have satisfactorily completed a degree (preferably at honours level) or the equivalent in an appropriate discipline.
It is also expected that they will have completed Module CLM002 (Teaching and Learning Methods) or the equivalent.

Aims of Module

To demonstrate a critical understanding of the pedagogy of assessment and use assessment methods in assessing learning when working in Higher Education.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Match assessment to the intended learning outcomes.
2. Make effective use of a range of techniques in assessing student competence, work-based experience and prior learning, and in organising continuous assessment, peer assessment and self assessment.
3. Grade assessed work and give appropriate feedback after assessment to learners.

Indicative Module Content

Assessing lower-cognitive skills, assessing higher-cognitive skills, assessing laboratory, studio, project and field work, assessing thesses and dissertations.

Assessing competence and work-based exerience; assessing prior learning and experience; using continuous assessment and portfolios; using peer and self-assessment.

Introduction to Computer Assisted Assessment (CAA), developing online assessment.

Mode of Delivery

This module is taught entirely by directed self-sutdy, backed up by individual tutorials arranged on an open-learning basis. It involves working through a structured series of study guide-workbooks and associated course readers, with support from a local mentor and a course tutor as and when required.
