Aims of Module

To develop English Language skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening to IELTS level 6 or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Produce written assignments in English applying academic conventions of style, presentation, grammar and referencing.
2. Conduct research related to subject area in order to gather and evaluate information, adhering to University guidelines on referencing
3. Prepare and deliver an oral presentation in English based on research.
4. Comprehend and extract meaning from spoken and written English.
5. Demonstrate motivation and commitment through consistent attendance at, and participation in, timetabled classes and on-line discussions, as well as through the use of English in non-academic, social and informal contexts.

Indicative Module Content

Academic English. Identifying relevant sources and gathering information. Plagiarism. Referencing. Grammar. Vocabulary. Paraphrasing and summarising. Collocations. Signalling devices. Language of cause and effect. Expressing complex ideas. Drafting. Proofreading. Presentation skills. General listening and listening to lectures. Fluency in speech and writing.

Mode of Delivery
