Aims of Module

To develop English Language skills in writing, reading, speaking, and listening to IELTS Level 5.5 or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Understand, write and talk about basic academic texts.
2. Produce a written assignment in English, applying basic academic conventions of style, grammar, presentation and referencing.
3. Develop and deliver an oral presentation in English.
4. Comprehend and extract meaning from spoken and written English, particularly academic texts.
5. Demonstrate motivation and commitment through consistent attendance at and participation in timetabled classes, as well as through the use of English in non-academic, social and informal contexts.

Indicative Module Content

General and academic English. Introduction to academic writing: academic style. Structuring assignments. Paragraphing. Grammar. Referencing. Plagiarism. Presenting written work. Sentence types and structure. Vocabulary. Oral presentation skills. General listening. Finding and using sources of information. Notemaking and recording information. Reading strategies.

Mode of Delivery
