Aims of Module
To provide the conceptual understanding, skills and analytical techniques to make effective decisions and control financial resources.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically assess a range of financial information.
2 Apply a range of advanced and specialised financial techniques in support of financial analysis and decision making.
3 Apply a range of financial techniques for the effective allocation and control of financial resources.
4 Use Microsoft Excel to support financial analysis and decision making.

Indicative Module Content
The financial environment. Information sources and decision-makers' needs: sources of financial information, critique of published accounts, international divergences, use of software packages, ratio analysis. Short-term decisions: cost behaviour, cost drivers and cost prediction techniques, CVP, pricing decisions, optimal pricing, operational budgets and behavioural issues. Long term decisions: capital structure, risk return and gearing, investment appraisal, DCF tools, working capital cycle, working capital management. Budget allocation and control systems, behavioural issues in effective budget management, divisional performance, transfer pricing.

Module Delivery
Face-to-face classroom methods (lectures, tutorials) are combined with computer-mediated activities. Paper and/or web-based learning materials, seminars and/or on-line support, with group work supported by discussion forums. Emphasis is placed on an interactive approach to communication and learning, with student involvement fostered through discussions and group working.
