Aims of Module
This module will enable students to demonstrate the application of accounting principles and tools and develop the knowledge to critically evaluate financial data of international companies, and understand the risks associated with the use of cost information to achieve profit goals and strategic objectives in business.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Solve key accounting calculations relevant to the management of cost allocations.
2 Analyze financial reports from a managerial perspective.
3 Critique the performance of cost centres within an organization and argue potential improvement measures.
4 Analyse investment decisions and defend funding allocation.
5 Critically appraise the performance of global organisations on the basis of financial information in the public domain.

Indicative Module Content
The Factory simulation game will be introduced and used in class to visualise how money flows through an organisation. Further, and throughout the course, the following key principles will be analysed and discussed in detail: financial interests of stakeholders; valuation of inventory; linear and digressive depreciation, and; assets and liabilities. Students undertake calculation and interpretation of financial statements including P&L, balance sheets and cash flow statements. The role and implications of financial ratios (ROS, ROE, AUR, ROI, CR) and the Acid Test are explored. The module concludes with a review of ratings, provisions, pay back, net present value and the Balance Score Card.

The module will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials and student-led activities, including a variety of case studies.
