Aims of Module | |||
---|---|---|---|
To equip students with an understanding of the structures of political power and governance around the world and the legal, ethical, democratic, economic and institutional frameworks they operate in. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the broad constitutional and political structure, systems of governance and public administration in the UK - at local, devolved, national and international levels. |
2 | Identify and define the ethical, legal and international political frameworks within which politicians and others who work in the public sphere operate. |
3 | Distinguish between different forms and functions of public bodies and services. |
4 | Critically evaluate the impact of political policy on wider public society. |
5 | Relate professional practice in the field to theoretical concepts from academic literature. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
UK constitution, systems of governance and public administration at local, devolved, national and international levels. The functioning of democratic societies, justice and public services around the world. The relationships between public services and political decision making. Concepts of the public sphere, policy creation, messaging and impact. Students will be engaged with UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development Systems Thinking, Critical Thinking, Self-awareness and Normative competencies, as they analyse complex systems, question norms, practices and opinions, reflect on their own values and perceptions, and consider conflicts of interest and contradictions in public affairs. |
