Aims of Module
This module aims to evaluate the positive and negative contributions of events to host regions. The impact of events will be analysed in-depth, from the perspectives of multiple stakeholders, to understand the potential outcomes. The module will consider the capacity of events to deliver growth and regeneration within the broader context of sustainability issues.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically discuss the historical development of event-led regeneration strategies.
2 Critically discuss the impacts and legacy of events on host regions.
3 Appraise alternative strategies for managing event impacts and ensuring sustainability.
4 Evaluate event impact strategies and apply them to a specific case studies.

Indicative Module Content
Post-industrial economies; emerging economies; economic impact; social impact; cultural impact; environmental impact; sustainability; cultural regeneration; cultural commodification; mega-events; creative classes; stakeholder environment; policy and funding. Students will investigate post-industrial & emerging economies, the economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts of events within the context of events sustainability and how events can contribute to SDGs 8 & 12. The module also enables students to engage with the UN’s ESD of Systems Thinking, Anticipatory, Critical Thinking and Strategic competencies as they reflect on impact mitigation strategies, cultural regeneration through events, and the influence of the stakeholder & policy environments.

Key concepts will be introduced via lectures. Tutorials will allow students to debate and discuss key issues.
