Aims of Module
To provide an understanding of the key principles, practices and concepts of project management. To examine the broad project environment and apply project management tools and techniques to a simulated project.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically discuss the 5 key project planning and control activities: cost, time, quality, scope and risk and the trade-offs and interaction between these variables.
2 Examine the project lifecycle and its relationship with project activities and processes.
3 Assess project planning and control tools and techniques in a project environment.
4 Formulate a project plan outline for a given scenario.

Indicative Module Content
The module provides a broad overview of project management principles including the fundamental activities, tools and techniques used in managing projects. The project lifecycle will be discussed and its underpinning role in managing project progress. The phases of inititaion, planning, execution, control and monitoring and close out are examined and applied to a project case which requires students to set objectives, determine scope, identify stakeholders and write a business case. An overview of the project environment, change control and its impact on managing scope, cost and schedule will also be explored. The module engages students with UNESCOs Education for Sustainable Development Sytems-thinking and Collaboration through the exploration and application of project management techniques to a variety of case studies and a new project venture.
