Aims of Module
To provide students with an understanding of how businesses develop and implement strategy, enabling the ability to analyse the drivers of competitive strategy and apply strategic principles across a range of organisation types. Students will develop critical analysis and evaluative skills through the application of strategic models to various organisations.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Discuss the impact the business environment has on contemporary strategic thinking.
2 Evaluate the sources of competitive advantage available to firms within a particular industry.
3 Analyse the range of strategic options available to firms within a particular industry.
4 Assemble appropriate models to differentiate proposals for future strategic development and actions.

Indicative Module Content
The business environment and the strategic context; Models of strategic choice; Strategic approaches review of principal strategic options; Sources of competitive advantage; Product-market strategies, generic strategies, environmental factors, five-forces, internal frameworks; Levels and types of business strategy; The terminology of strategy; Strategic analysis; Strategy selection; Implementation risks.

Module Delivery
This module will be delivered in the 1st semester. The module is a lecture-based unit, supplemented with interactive tutorials and directed study, including case studies.
