Aims of Module
To provide students with a focus and understanding of the underlying principles of research methods and professional practice. The format of this process requires the student to develop the capability to identify and utilise appropriate strategies and techniques within the context of an individual research investigation into professional development and practice and deploy transferable skills in academic and management research.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Develop research skills including critical analysis, literature searching, academic writing and referencing;
2 Formulate relevant research topics and questions related to professional practice, which provide a scope for an individual investigation;
3 Assemble different research philosophies, strategies, approaches and literature, which provides suitable scope and impacts on the development of a research proposal;
4 Assess research methods and project management techniques, in the design and planning of a research programme.

Indicative Module Content
Introduction to research approaches in a professional context. The development and implementation of information search strategies. Principle methods used to gather data i.e. qualitative and quantitative approaches, with a consideration of ethical issues. Research rationale e.g. case studies, action research, surveys. Project planning and development.

Module Delivery
This module will be delivered in the 1st semester. The module is a lecture-based unit, supplemented by directed study.

Explanatory Text
The calculation of the overall grade for this module is based on 40% weighting of Coursework 1 (horizontal axis) and 60% weighting of Coursework 2 (vertical axis) components. An overall minimum grade D is required to pass the module.
