Aims of Module
To enable students to draw on, and extend, business knowledge and skills acquired in the separate areas of study to create a viable business plan for a business-start up. Additionally the module allows the students to develop and demonstrate skills in knowledge networking and team working.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Formulate new business ideas and business diversification/growth opportunities;
2 Translate a business idea into a written business plan;
3 Develop communication and data analysis skills to successfully present to sell a business idea to a panel of investors;
4 Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others.

Indicative Module Content
The students will be introduced to the process of business start-up through lectures and guided tutorial activities. The specific focus is placed on the process of preparing a written business plan appropriate for presentation to potential business investors, or to senior management as a basis for reorganistion. The students will work on all relevent aspects of a business start-up including approaches to generating business ideas; opportunity recognition; market research; marketing strategy; raising start-up finance; and business plan formats and components. Working in small groups, students will generate a business idea, perform the necessary background investigations to translate the idea into a written business plan, and defend their plan.

Module Delivery
This module will be delivered in the 2nd semester. The module is delivered through lectures and group work and supplemented by interactive tutorials and directed study. Students are expected to work independently, undertaking market research, carrying out feasibility studies and preparing a business plan. They are expected to show evidence of innovation, entrepreneurship, leadership and problem solving abilities, and to work effectively as members of a small team.

Explanatory Text
The calculation of the overall grade for this module is based on 70% weighting of Coursework 1 (horizontal axis) and 30% weighting of Coursework 2 (vertical axis) components. An overall minimum grade D is required to pass the module.
