Aims of Module
This module will enable students to:
Have a detailed understanding of the underlying principles of research methods and professional research practice.
Develop the capability to identify and utilise appropriate strategies and techniques in the context of an individual research investigation.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Identify relevant research topics and questions related to hospitality practice, which provide scope for an individual investigation.
2 Review and use existing research and literature to provide suitable scope and context in the development of a research proposal.
3 Identify major research approaches and methodologies that will assist in the development and management of the research process in a professional context.
4 Critically evaluate and apply research methods in the design and planning of a research proposal.

Indicative Module Content
Introduction to research rationale, philosophies and approaches in a business and social research context. Developing a research framework and implementation of information search strategies. Principle data collection methods and their application. Sampling methods. Formulating data collection questions. Data analysis approaches and applications. Ethical issues in research. Project planning and development.

Module Delivery
The module will be taught through a combination of lecture sessions, tutorials and student-led activities. Students are expected to engage with a series of online resources throughout the course.
