Aims of Module | |||
---|---|---|---|
To develop an in depth understanding of the management of people within organisations by introducing key factors impacting on the structure and culture of organisations as well as the behaviour and attitudes of groups and individuals. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Critically analyse concepts and theories relating to the study of organisations as social systems and communication structures as base for organisational culture. |
2 | Formulate critically evaluated proposals to resolve people management problems at individual, group and organisational levels. |
3 | Critically evaluate group processes and characteristics, including leadership and teamworking, communication and managing diversity. |
4 | Critically evaluate the means by which companies develop as learning organisations based on systems thinking. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
Examination of current theory with a focus on practice in managing people in organisations; systems, describing the organisation, groups and individuals. The organisational perspective (structure, culture, development, change). Examination of issues involving the group and the individual under a range of topics drawn from leadership and management, communication, evolution of organisations, power and hierarchy, leading change, managing conflict, managing diversity, the global context, groups and teams, perception, motivation and personality, the psychological contract and performance management/appraisals. |
Module Delivery |
---|
Face-to-face classroom methods (lectures, tutorials) are combined with computer-mediated activities. Paper and/or web-based learning materials, seminars and/or on-line support, with group work supported by discussion forums. Emphasis is placed on an interactive approach to communication and learning, with student involvement fostered through discussions and group working. |
